Thanks for checking out Pluck the Day! A challenge to myself to post an original drawing/sketch/cartoon/comic at least 5 days a week.
On December 1st, 2012, I started a 30 day running streak. My goal was to run no less than one mile, outdoors, every day. Just like Forrest Gump, once I hit the end of 2012 and rang in 2013, I decided to just keep on going. So, every day, in the last three years, I have gone out and run. That’s 1096 consecutive days. This year of the running streak was extra exciting because I ran my first ultramarathon, which was also my first trail race as well. I also ventured up to Buffalo for my first marathon outside the DC area.
The toughest part has been training during the winter months in Northern Virginia. Cold I can deal with, as well as snow. But the ice we get can be extremely dangerous. Luckily, I have only endured minor injuries and I have access to some of the best sports doctors and physical therapists in the country. Of course, sometimes it can be a challenge when their number one advice is “take a few days off.” NOPE!
I don’t have any plans for my Streak. I may end it this month or go on for a dozen years, health permitting, but as of now I am pretty sure I will run again tomorrow. It’s my greatest lesson. By focusing on the near term, I’ve ended up where I am today. I am trying to apply the same lesson to my writing and art and can only hope I can equal the success I have found in running. Check back in three years and we’ll see if I am succeeding.
