The Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #4 is almost here. But before we pick up the new book, let’s look back at what’s been going on with our friendly neighborhood web-head. (Click here for a list of what’s coming out tomorrow. We split the list into two groups: new single issues and new HC, TP, and Reprints.)
We are in the Battleworld, which is a “massive patchwork planet composed of the fragments of worlds that no longer exist.” In Peter Parker’s world, there are no more superheroes, only Regent. Regent was once known as Augusto Roman, head of Empire Unlimited who conducted research on super-human abilities. Previous to becoming the ruler of this world, Regent harvested the mutant powers of the X-men. The Avengers show up to stop him, but he is virtually unstoppable. In a scene which is burned into my brain, Regent literally disarms the Hulk.
As the Avengers are being dismantled, Spiderman confronts Venom, who has escaped from his prison and is holding Peter’s family hostage. A battle ensues and Mary Jane is able to escape with their daughter, Annie. Venom follows after MJ, with the web-slinger close behind. When Spider-Man catches up to Venom, he fights him with an intensity never seen before. One of a father fighting for the safety of his child. Venom notices the passion and taunts Peter, telling him the horrible things that he plans to do to Annie. Knowing that Venom will never stop hunting his family, Spider-Man does the only thing he can do to keep them safe. He collapses a building on Venom, killing him. It is at that point that Peter decides that in order to protect his wife and daughter, he needs to hang up the Spidey suit and just be Dad.
After defeating the Avengers, Regent becomes the supreme ruler. It is a new world that includes the constant scanning of the population in order to find those with mutant powers. If found, they are taken away so their abilities can be harvested. Luckily, Peter is good with tech, and has created two inhibitor bracelets to help hide from the scans. One for him and one for his daughter. There is a new motto in the Parker household. With great power comes great responsibility…to hide it.
The day to day life of the Parkers is quiet. MJ focuses on her acting career and Annie goes to school. MJ warns Annie not to use her powers at school, even if someone is in trouble. As for Peter, he still takes pictures for the paper. One day he gets lucky and tracks down a juicy photoshoot. There is a standoff between Demolition Man, who is shouting anti-Regent sentiment, versus Rhino, Shocker and Boomerang, whose job it is to deliver people with powers to the supreme ruler. Mockingbird and Prowler are watching from the shadows. They are working for S.H.I.E.L.D., which, in this world, is an underground organization focused on helping those with special abilities. But it seems like D-Man isn’t worth saving and ends up being taken away by the trio of Regent goons. Regent is unimpressed with the lack of abilities of D-man but he does here better news. There has been a child with a high power rating detected at one of the schools.
While Peter is meeting with Mr. Jameson in order to deliver his recent pictures, he overhears that there is a raid on Annie’s school. Peter takes off and with the use of his Spider abilities, and only a tightly drawn hoodie to conceal his identity, he heads over to the school. Turns out, Regent is after the Power kids, Katie, Alex, Jack and Julie. Spidey shows up and helps the kids get away. Learning that Spider-Man is back, Regent decides to bring out his elite team. He sends out The Sinister Six to capture the web crawler.
Safe at home, the Parkers contemplate whether or not they should just run away. MJ thinks it will do them no good but she does think it’s time for Spider-Man to return. However, in order to help stay concealed, there needs to be a change. She pulls out a special black Spidey outfit. In order to stay hidden, the Parkers still need chips for the inhibitor. Therefore, a newly fashioned Spider-Man goes to a pawn shop to buy parts, but the shop keeper hits a secret switch which alerts the Sinister Six. Dr. Otto Octavius is the first to show up, but he is no match for Spidey. By the time the other members arrive, Dr. Octavius is severely beaten and his mechanical octopus arms have been torn off. The remaining Sinister Six team determines that between his appearance at the school, the inhibitor chips and his aggressive fighting style, that Spider-Man must have a child he is protecting. So, Regent calls for all children from the school, and their family members, to be screened the next day.
Luckily, with the inhibitor chips, the Parkers make it through the scanning undetected. However, the little boy directly behind them has abilities and sets off the scanner. Chaos breaks out as the remainder of the Sinister Six swoop in to detain the boy and his father. The Parker’s have a quick side meeting to discuss if Spider-Man should intervene. They decide that it is time to go all in. The Parker’s verses the World. Peter slips off, changes into his black Spidey suit and starts fighting off the bad guys. However, Mysterio is able to determine that MJ and Annie are with Spider-Man and two Regent officers grab them. Peter watches them get dragged away as he tries to battle Vulture, Kraven the Hunter and Shocker.
What will we discover this week when the newest issue hits the stores? We are told that “To protect his family, Spider-Man takes the fight to the god-like REGENT! But that doesn’t mean his daughter will sit back and let her dad have all the ‘fun!’” I can’t wait!
