This week we see the continuation of DC’s Earth 2: Society series. In order to get ready for Issue #3 we are going to look back at where we were the last time we saw these superheroes from that other universe. (Click here for a list of what’s coming out tomorrow. We split the list into two groups: new single issues and new HC, TP, and Reprints.)
First, let’s just start by admitting that Earth 2 has gotten a little confusing, especially if you didn’t follow the story line from Earth 2: World’s End and the Convergence series. Also, if you are not familiar with Earth 2, just know that it is an alternate universe where continuities are different. I am going to assume there is a basic understanding of the characters in Earth 2. If not, a quick internet search should provide some valuable input.
As for Earth 2: Society, we start off on the new Earth that was awarded to the surviving members of the original Earth 2 after the Convergence ended. One of the big changes during the convergence was the death of Thomas Wayne. Also, Dick Grayson was shot by the Joker and paralyzed from the waist down. However, when we start the new series, we see new Gotham a year after the end of Convergence, built from the remains of the TSS Endurance, an escape ship that crash landed with survivors from the previous Earth 2. There is also a new Batman, who is apparently Dick Grayson. He is hunting down Terry Sloan. Batman is in route to capture him, but stops to help a young boy who is being mugged in an alley. Dick is still hoping that one of the shuttles that made it to the new Earth had his son on it and takes every opportunity to find him. Meanwhile, Sloan has been nabbed by Johnny Sorrow and his crew. It appears that Sloan is not in good standing with the citizens of Earth 2, with Johnny noting that “You’ve ruled from above long enough.” Sure, he built the shuttles that helped so many people survive when the original Earth 2 was destroyed by Apokolips, but that was over a year ago. It looks like, since then, he has been a bad boy. Batman shows up and takes out Jonny and his crew. He attempts to apprehend Sloan, for “…crimes against society.” Terry protests that Overwatch has been compromised and that someone is hunting him. He then escapes with the use of a jetpack with wings. (Where does he get those wonderful toys?) Through flashbacks, we learn that Huntress, Red Arrow and Mister Terrific were aboard the TSS Endurance. It was Mister Terrific that found Dick Grayson and gave him the ability to walk again, allowing him to become Batman.
After losing Batman, Sloan goes to the remains of the TSS Endurance. In the ship, Sloan retrieves the “Source Vault” which contains the Blue Print for all living animals and plants from the old Earth. Sloan wants to combine the Source Vault with his Genesis Machine in order to terraform the new planet. There is a drawback though. All native life to the planet will be destroyed. We learn more about the arrival of Sloan and the escape ships to the new Earth. Upon arrival, the command ship, TSS Overwatch-One, was sabotaged. The control system was taken over by traitors and the ship was disabled while the security system was turned against the crew. To prevent the entire fleet from being taken over, Sloan makes the other ships descend (a.k.a. crash) onto the new Earth. This created the four new cities of Earth 2. TSS Endurance created Gotham. TSS Belgica created New Atlantis. TSS Aurora created Neotropolis and TSS Erebus becomes Midwest City. Luckily superheroes, such as Jimmy Olsen, Huntress, Red Arrow, Aquawoman, Hawkgirl, The Flash, Val-Zod, Super Girl and Green Lantern as were properly matched with the new cities. Of course, no one on the crashed ships knew what happened on Overwatch, so they assume Sloan forced them to crash land in some sort of play for power. In present time, we see Batman finally catch up to Sloan, but it is too late. Sloan activates the Source Vault. A huge structure comes out from the ground and we are left with Sloan standing on top of it, proclaiming himself as the “Maker of Worlds!”
Oh what fun Issue 3 should be. The description for the new installment reads “The utopian society of Earth-2 begins to show cracks as the new world reacts to the assassination plot that’s left a huge power vacuum on the planet. Which hero can step up to fill the void?” I can’t wait to see what Daniel Wilson and Jorge Jimenez have in store for us this week.
