Cinema Club: What Anime should I start watching. (Survey)

Alternate title for this post:  Can I get a little help?

Anime_MoviesAs part of my growth as a geek I try to take on new challenges.  For example, A few months ago, I ventured into the Monster Movie genre by watching the original American version of Godzilla.  (My review is here: Godzilla King of the Monsters.)  Now I am trying to introduce myself to Anime.    While most genres have prevalent tent poles to help guide newcomers, I have always had trouble finding an entry point for Japanese Animation.  I know it is weird because saying Anime is pretty much like someone saying they want to get into American cartoons.  There are so many different kinds, from old school like the Disney and Hanna-Barbera cartoons, to action cartoons, like G.I. Joe and Transformers, to comedy cartoons like the Simpsons and South Park.  So in order to be more specific, I was looking to get started with Sci-Fi Anime.

So, like the basic geek I am…I went to Netflix and searched for Anime/SciFi/Movies.  This is a good chunk of what popped up.  There are a dozen titles there and I have no clue where to start.  I am not sure if some of them require previous viewing of a TV series or other movies to make sense.  So, if anyone happens to know these movies and would like to vote on the good ones to start with, then please feel free to do so.  You can vote for as many as you like.  Or, in the comments section, you can right in suggestions of movies I should try to find.  Between Hulu, Netflix, Crackle and other streaming apps, I feel I should be able to track down almost anything at this point.  I appreciate everyone’s help and look forward to your suggestions.

About OxenTrot

During the day, I am a mild mannered desk jockey who helps to manage a large IT company.  At night, I am a family man, who is insanely in love with his wife and a proud daddy to an amazing girl.  But in the pre-dawn hours, as most everyone else is still asleep, I am my alter ego.  During that time, I am: OxenTrot. Ox was a call sign bestowed upon me while I was an active duty United States Marine, mainly in tribute to the fact that I was a major gym rat. After 5 years and three tours of duty, I reentered the civilian world.  My call sign was replaced by my actual name but the Ox still lived inside. As I began to adapt to my new life, I also began to take on new adventures, such as starting a family, getting a “big boy” job and taking on endurance sports.

Heh, my top 3 aren’t even listed. Was wondering when you’d branch out to anime!

Attack on Titan, Man. I just recently started watching anime. Started with this Vampire thing. I forget the name. Holy cow the misogyny!! So I transitioned into Attack on Titan. I thought all amines were cute little things with giggling girls. Uh. No. Just unrelieved misery and pain. Well. Almost unrelieved. Levi’s got OCD and it’s hilarious.

You nail one of my big concerns. I want to stay away from “giggly” stuff and the “sexy time” stuff. I noticed Netflix has Attack on Titan and it peaked my interest when I read the description. It’s going on my list! Thanks for the input.

Be aware this series does not yet have an ending.

Also be aware you’ll sit there going – “SERIOUSLY??!!” a lot. Unexpected things happen – no-one’s life is sacred. But then there’s bits right out of the blue where you have to pause and laugh out loud – and they’re just thrown in there no warning, no comment, just random hilarity when you least expect it – throwaway lines that are easy to miss – then it’s back to the screaming and crying.

Basically it’s a good series for those bored with the hope and humanity in Game of Thrones.

Can’t wait til you watch it, I hope you like it as much as I did.

Thanks for the…warnings. You absolutely found the best way to sell me on a new show. I just went to Netflix and put it into my watchlist. This may be my early morning, before work show. I will keep you updated. Thanks!!!!
