Throwback Thursday – Commodore 64 games (Blue Max)

We continue this week’s Throwback Thursday with a look at another vintage video game from the Commodore 64.  We already looked at Impossible Mission and now we go to the skies for Blue Max.

Blue Max is a game that I felt I had mastered in my youth.  I loved this game.  I knew nothing of the story line, nothing of the true objective, I just knew I was flying through the sky bombing buildings, shooting down planes and taking out bridges.  What was better than hitting the road as a car was driving by and getting a two for one kill?  Nothing excited me more than when I played the YouTube video below.  The instant I heard the music I was transported back to my childhood home, sitting in a folding chair in front of the computer which was in the corner of our dining room.  I don’t think I ever actually beat the game, but I’m pretty sure I see an emulator in my future and this will definitely be on my hit list.

Some of the Details

You are Max Chatsworth. Known by your mates as ‘The Blue Max’ you wear the very name of the medal given by the Axis powers to shoot down your plane!  Now, you must earn the title.  To be successful you must make a final assault on three specially marked targets within the city.  You have only one aircraft and very little time to accomplish this most difficult of missions.

TAKEOFF – Press   <SPACE>   on the computer console.   When the speed reaches 100mph press FORWARD on the joystick.

BOMBING – Bombing is accomplished by pressing the fire button on pulling back on the joystick.

I still remember learning to wait until I hit 100mph before trying to take off, freaking out when the runway was getting short and you knew you wouldn’t get up to speed.  And also learning the tough lesson to be high enough during bombing for fear of crashing into the ground.

Is everyone ready?  Well then let’s go.  LOAD “*” n, 8, 1

About OxenTrot

During the day, I am a mild mannered desk jockey who helps to manage a large IT company.  At night, I am a family man, who is insanely in love with his wife and a proud daddy to an amazing girl.  But in the pre-dawn hours, as most everyone else is still asleep, I am my alter ego.  During that time, I am: OxenTrot. Ox was a call sign bestowed upon me while I was an active duty United States Marine, mainly in tribute to the fact that I was a major gym rat. After 5 years and three tours of duty, I reentered the civilian world.  My call sign was replaced by my actual name but the Ox still lived inside. As I began to adapt to my new life, I also began to take on new adventures, such as starting a family, getting a “big boy” job and taking on endurance sports.
