It’s official. The next cinematic Spider-man will be a Peter Parker, not a Miles Morales.

So Marvel announced today that “…Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.”  (Read more here.)

I’m not sure how I feel about that.  I was sort of hoping that Marvel would play the old switcheroo and announced that they were going to give Peter Parker a rest for a bit and bring in Miles Morales (he is Spider-man in the Ultimate Universe, who picks up the mantle of Web Slinger after that universe’s Peter Park dies.)

I will admit that I am still just getting back into comics, so for all I know, Miles is a second rate Spidey compared to Peter, but I just feel that we have seen Peter Parker over and over again.  It doesn’t work.  I’m not drawn to watching any of the Spiderman movies, whether it is a Toby or a Garfield.  At the very least, bringing in Miles Morales would warrant ANOTHER origin movie.  Seriously, how many different ways are you going to show me how the same high school kid can get bit by a spider?

However, from what I read on the interweb, this Holland kid is outstanding and young enough to be a presence for a long time, especially with the Civil War movies coming up.  Now that Marvel has made their decision, I am fully hoping that this Spider-Man movie is the one that lives up to the other Marvel movies of recent.  I will keep my fingers crossed.

So what do you think of the new Spidey?

About OxenTrot

During the day, I am a mild mannered desk jockey who helps to manage a large IT company.  At night, I am a family man, who is insanely in love with his wife and a proud daddy to an amazing girl.  But in the pre-dawn hours, as most everyone else is still asleep, I am my alter ego.  During that time, I am: OxenTrot. Ox was a call sign bestowed upon me while I was an active duty United States Marine, mainly in tribute to the fact that I was a major gym rat. After 5 years and three tours of duty, I reentered the civilian world.  My call sign was replaced by my actual name but the Ox still lived inside. As I began to adapt to my new life, I also began to take on new adventures, such as starting a family, getting a “big boy” job and taking on endurance sports.

I think the world at large is always going to equate Spider-Man with Peter Parker because that’s just the way it’s been for 50 years. Miles, as great a character as he is, has only been around since 2011, so I think you’d have a lot of people who read comics when they were younger look at Miles as Spidey and be completely confused.

That being said, it’s also been confirmed that once Secret Wars ends, Miles will basically be THE Spider-Man of the new Marvel Comics Universe with Peter acting in a mentor role. So I think we are seeing a bit of a shift in the lives of these characters that have been around for half a century.

I agree, it is 100% logical for them to stick with Peter Parker. But there was a small piece of me which wanted them to really be daring. Sort of like how sometimes I want to see Luke miss the shot at the end of New Hope, just to see what would have happened next. In fact, the first time Lucas rereleased the original Star Wars trilogy in the theaters, I joked that they should make an alternate ending and every thousandth showing, have the empire win.
